Yorkgate railway station, located in North Belfast, was opened in 1992, replacing the former York Road station. Initially intended as a temporary terminus for Larne Line services until the completion of the Dargan Bridge, which connected the Larne Line to the NI Railways network at Lanyon Place.
In September 2020, a planning application was submitted for a significant redevelopment of the station. This redevelopment includes the construction of a new train station building with fully accessible customer facilities, new public amenities such as retail space and toilets, waiting areas, as well as provisions for cycle parking.
Additionally, the plans entail the installation of a new passenger footbridge between platforms, the widening of platform width on both passenger platforms to alleviate congestion during peak times, and the addition of new canopies on platforms to provide increased cover for passenger waiting areas.
In May 2021, the planning application received approval from Belfast City Council. The newly redeveloped station is scheduled to become operational in 2024, with the demolition of the old station anticipated to be completed by late 2024
